Half-Life 2 Celebrates 20 Years with Anniversary Update and Documentary

Valve is marking the 20th anniversary of *Half-Life 2* with a significant update packed with new content and fixes. As part of the celebration, the game is free to play on Steam until 1 PM ET today, November 18.

New Commentary and Enhanced Features

The update introduces 3.5 hours of developer commentary, offering insights into the making of *Half-Life 2*. Players can now enjoy in-game Steam Workshop support and utilize Steam's new Game Recording feature. The update also addresses long-standing bugs, including fixes for disappearing objects and gaps in the game world. Improved horizon lines and higher-resolution lightmaps enhance the game's visual experience.

Players can toggle between original and updated graphics settings for blood and fire effects and try out a new High Quality mode. Additionally, aim assist has been revamped for a smoother gameplay experience.

Episodes 1 and 2 Integrated

*Half-Life 2: Episodes 1 and 2* are now integrated into the main game. Valve has reduced the standalone visibility of these episodes on Steam, moving them to the Tools menu.

Exclusive Documentary and Episode 3 Insights

Valve collaborated with Danny O'Dwyer's Secret Tape to release a two-hour documentary exploring the development and legacy of *Half-Life 2*. The feature sheds light on the canceled *Half-Life 2: Episode 3*, revealing new details and footage. Episode 3 was set in the Arctic and centered around the mysterious Borealis ship. Although development lasted six months, the project never reached completion, ultimately shelved in favor of finishing *Left 4 Dead*.

Valve engineer David Speyrer reflected on the decision, admitting, “We could have gone back and spent two years making Episode 3.” Despite this, Valve shifted focus to new projects, later releasing the VR title *Half-Life: Alyx* in 2020 to critical acclaim.

New Player Milestone

The anniversary update has sparked renewed interest, helping *Half-Life 2* achieve a new concurrent player record on Steam. Fans can relive the classic or explore its enhanced features, celebrating two decades of gaming history.
