Microsoft unveils Mac mini-sized desktop PC designed exclusively for online use
Microsoft has introduced a new product called "Windows 365 Link," a compact desktop device similar in size to Apple's M4 Mac mini. Unlike the Mac mini, which operates as a full-fledged computer, Windows 365 Link is a cloud-based system that relies entirely on Microsoft's cloud services to function.
Microsoft’s Alternative to the Mac mini
The announcement was made during Microsoft Ignite 2024, a conference for developers and IT professionals. Externally, the device resembles the Mac mini in size and design, featuring a small black box with various ports. However, the similarities end there, as the two devices differ greatly in functionality.
While the Mac mini comes equipped with powerful M4 or M4 Pro chips and functions as a standalone computer, Windows 365 Link features minimal specifications. This is because it operates as a thin client, streaming a Windows experience from the cloud instead of running an operating system locally.
Target Audience and Technical Details
Microsoft envisions the Windows 365 Link as a cost-effective solution for corporate clients. It allows businesses to avoid investing in expensive hardware, instead offering a lightweight device connected to virtual machines in the cloud. This approach provides access to high-performance computing resources remotely.
The device includes 8GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, and an undisclosed Intel processor, which primarily supports streaming functionality. Connectivity options include USB-C, two USB-A ports, DisplayPort, HDMI, Ethernet, Wi-Fi 6E, and Bluetooth 5.3.
Security and Limitations
According to Microsoft, the cloud-based design enhances security by encrypting all data and ensuring nothing is stored locally, reducing the risk of theft or hacking. However, this reliance on cloud services also means the device becomes inoperable without an active internet connection.
Availability and Pricing
Windows 365 Link is set to launch next year with a price tag of $349. Users will also need a Windows 365 subscription, starting at $28 per month.
While the concept is intriguing, comparisons to the Mac mini are inevitable. For just $250 more, the Mac mini offers significantly better hardware and the ability to run a local operating system, making it a more versatile choice for many users.
